Cloutier出生在美国加利福尼亚州的奥尔巴尼，曾就读于加州大学伯克利分校，读体育运动专业，专攻美国橄榄球和棒球。他在1959年还参加了玫瑰杯美式足球赛。不过，之后由于家庭财政困难，他退学了。
