国际货币基金组织 (IMF) 在建议创建环保的支付系统方面迈出了一大步，对生态系统中不同Crypto的共识机制对能源消耗进行了研究。 使用PoW工作量证明共识机制的Crypto具有高能耗已是一个板上钉钉的事实。 由于排放含碳烟雾，PoW对环境构成了严重威胁，而这提高了对使用非PoW机制的Crypto资产的偏好。 
IMF详细阐述了不同Crypto共识机制对环境的影响，并打算依此来制定出适合中央银行数字货币设计的最佳机制。 此外，国际货币基金组织还讨论了有关改善Crypto对环境影响的政策，并建议开发人员选择非PoW协议。 IMF将几种非PoW协议的能源效率与传统金融系统中的能源效率进行了比较，并对前者给予了很高的评价。 IMF指出非PoWCrypto应用程序的核心设计结构和支付系统更加适合用户。
